Review key selection factors for bag filter housings, including bag size, flow rate, pressure, material, connections, sealing, and maintenance access.
Overview
A bag filter housing holds and supports the filter bag, directs the liquid through the intended filtration path, contains operating pressure and provides the required sealing interfaces. Select the housing and bag as a matched assembly; a housing size alone does not establish particle-retention performance.
Review the liquid, filtration objective, bag construction and interface, flow, operating and design conditions, pressure-drop allowance, materials, connections and maintenance space before requesting a quote. Unknown information should remain open rather than become an assumed specification.

What a Bag Filter Housing Does
In a typical bag filtration system, the housing directs liquid through the bag while the support basket and sealing arrangement support the intended flow path. The exact construction, flow direction and bag retention method depend on the equipment.
Containment pressure, sealing fit and particle retention are related but different questions. A bag media rating does not certify the vessel, and a vessel pressure rating does not establish the bag’s retention efficiency or its allowable differential pressure.
Single-Bag or Multi-Bag: Compare the Duty
Arrangement
When it may be reviewed
What still needs confirmation
Single-bag housing
One compatible bag may meet the required duty within the selected pressure-drop and access limits
Liquid properties, media/rating, loading, flow, bag/basket fit and change-out objectives
Multi-bag housing
Additional total filtration area or capacity may suit the process
Actual flow distribution, solids loading, pressure drop, bag configuration, footprint and safe maintenance
Duty/standby or duplex arrangement
The project requires a separately maintainable filtration path
System design, isolation/changeover arrangement, remaining capacity and approved operating procedure
There is no universal flow threshold that selects single-bag versus multi-bag equipment. More bags do not by themselves guarantee a longer service interval or uninterrupted filtration during maintenance. A multi-bag vessel and a duplex arrangement describe different design decisions; specify continuity requirements separately.
Flow, Viscosity and Pressure Drop
Provide normal and peak flow with units and clarify whether each value is per housing or for the entire system. Identify how many housings and bags operate together and whether any are standby. Equal flow through every parallel bag or branch should not be assumed from a simple division of the total.
Describe the liquid, operating temperature, viscosity if known, solids type/loading, and the selected media and micron-rating description. A published capacity based on water and a particular bag is not a guarantee for another fluid or bag construction. Use pressure-drop information applicable to the proposed housing-plus-bag assembly and operating conditions.
Clean pressure drop, pressure rise during loading and the acceptable service interval must be reviewed together. More area or a coarser rating is not an automatic remedy for an unsuitable medium, changed fluid, sealing issue or process upset.
Bag Size, Basket and Seal Compatibility
Size #1 and Size #2 are common starting descriptions, but confirm actual bag dimensions, ring/collar profile, basket dimensions, hold-down arrangement and the bag sealing interface. Do not assume bags with the same size label are interchangeable.
Check the cover gasket or O-ring separately from the bag-to-housing seal. A welded bag seam does not establish zero bypass at the ring or prove a leak-free assembled housing. For replacement review, provide the current housing model, nameplate, bag label, drawings, measured dimensions and safely obtained photos.
Materials of Construction
Available materials depend on the specified equipment; common housing concepts include stainless steel, carbon steel, plastic or lined constructions. Review all wetted parts, including basket, supports, seals and internal components, against the exact liquid or mixture, concentration, temperature, exposure time and cleaning conditions.
A material grade alone does not establish compatibility for every chemical or regulated/hygienic application. State the required materials records, surface/cleaning requirements, certificates or inspection documents. Their availability and suitability must be confirmed for the proposed configuration.
Keep Pressure and Temperature Requirements Distinct
Record normal and maximum operating pressure and temperature, pressure units/reference and any design requirements already established in the project. State known vacuum, surge, upset or cleaning conditions for engineering review. Do not assume separately listed catalog maxima define an approved combined pressure-temperature operating point.
Identify the measurement taps when reporting differential pressure. A complete-housing reading can include losses beyond the bag media. Confirm the bag/basket/internal-component ΔP limits separately from vessel pressure, together with the approved alarm and change-out criteria. This guide supplies no universal change-out setting.
Connections and Maintenance Access
Provide inlet/outlet size, exact standard/type, orientation and the available mating-part drawing or specification. Thread designations, flange/sealing-face details, or clamp/ferrule dimensions may be needed. Similar nominal size alone does not confirm a suitable connection or pressure/temperature limit.
Review drain, vent and instrument connections as project requirements, not as instructions to alter the equipment. Record footprint, cover-opening space, bag/basket removal clearance, lifting access, supports and piping constraints for the actual installation.
Never open or service pressurized equipment. Inspection and change-out belong to qualified site personnel using the applicable equipment documentation and facility procedures. This page is selection support, not a maintenance or vessel-opening procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use any filter bag in a housing with the same size label?
No. Confirm dimensions, ring/collar, support basket, hold-down and sealing interfaces. A size label or visually similar ring is not a documented fit check.
What information is most important for a housing quote?
Start with the liquid, flow, pressure, temperature, bag/interface details, connection requirements, quantity and destination. Existing equipment documents and clear photos can help resolve missing information.
Should I choose single-bag or multi-bag equipment?
Compare documented duty, liquid properties, media, loading, pressure-drop allowance, footprint and maintenance requirements. Do not select by a universal flow threshold or assume more bags mean longer life.
Does multi-bag mean I can change bags while filtration continues?
Not by itself. Continuous service during maintenance requires an appropriately designed alternative path and an approved procedure. Specify the duty/standby or duplex requirement for engineering review.
Does stainless steel establish chemical or food-contact suitability?
No. Review the complete wetted assembly, process and cleaning conditions, and the actual required documentation. This guide does not certify a housing or application.
Does the housing pressure rating define when bags should be changed?
No. Vessel pressure, component differential-pressure limits and approved change-out criteria are different information. Follow the selected equipment and site requirements.
