How to Install a Liquid Filter Bag: Seating and Startup Checklist
The filter bag, ring or collar, support basket, housing seat, closure and liquid-flow direction work as one interface. Correct material and micron rating do not prevent poor results when the bag is unsupported, twisted, unevenly seated or paired with the wrong housing geometry.
This review does not replace the actual housing manual, equipment nameplate, site isolation rules or an approved pressure-vessel procedure. Closure hardware, torque, venting, valve position, startup pressure, flow and differential-pressure limits are equipment-specific.
1. Confirm the bag and housing interface before opening
Start with identification, not installation. Record the housing manufacturer and model, the installed basket, the current bag size, the ring or collar style, the media, micron rating and relevant part numbers. If the replacement is based on a sample, compare the new and old bags side by side before the used bag is discarded.
Check that the bag diameter and length correspond to the basket and housing. A familiar label such as Size #1 or Size #2 is useful, but it does not prove that the top interface, basket opening and hold-down arrangement are compatible. Review the housing drawing or manual when available. If the identity is uncertain, photograph the nameplate, complete basket, sealing area, existing bag and new bag, then pause for supplier review.
Confirm flow direction from the actual housing documentation. Do not reverse inlet and outlet connections or assume that every housing uses the same arrangement.

2. Follow the approved isolation and opening procedure
Before opening a housing, follow the site and OEM procedure for shutdown, isolation, draining, venting and verification of a safe, zero-pressure condition. Residual pressure or hazardous trapped liquid may remain even when a pump is stopped.
This is not a valve sequence or pressure-vessel opening instruction. Valves, vents, drains, gauges and safety devices vary by system. Use required protection and containment. If a device behaves unexpectedly, stop under the site procedure.
Open the cover only after the equipment has been made safe under those controls. Keep removed parts clean and protected. Do not alter or bypass a safety device to make the housing easier to open.
3. Inspect the housing interior, basket and sealing area
With the housing safely open, look for residue, sharp contact points, visible corrosion, foreign material or damage. Remove debris only by a method approved for the process and housing material.
Confirm that the restrainer or support basket is present, fully seated and appropriate for the housing. Check for distortion, broken areas, incomplete seating and rough points that could leave the bag unsupported or damage the media. A filter bag is flexible; the basket provides support during operation. If the basket is damaged or does not match the bag and housing, do not treat the filter bag as a substitute for that support.
Inspect the sealing surface, gasket or O-ring and bag seat for cleanliness, correct position and visible damage. Lubrication, replacement and material rules must follow the OEM manual and process compatibility.
4. Place and seat the filter bag
Lower the approved filter bag into the support basket without dragging it across sharp edges. Allow the bag body to extend into the basket rather than remaining folded near the opening. Check around the circumference and down the accessible length for twisting, doubled fabric, trapped labels or a bag body hanging above the basket bottom.
Position the ring or collar evenly on the intended basket edge or housing seat. The exact geometry varies: a sewn ring, molded collar, snap ring, flange or another top construction may use a different seating and hold-down method. The interface should match the existing design and the equipment documentation. Do not force a ring into a groove or assume that a similar-looking collar is interchangeable.
Install the specified hold-down or retaining device by the housing manufacturer’s method. Confirm that it supports the intended area without displacing the ring, collar or bag fabric.
If the bag will not lie open against the basket, the top interface sits tilted, or the body remains twisted or suspended, stop before closing. 5. Complete the pre-close review
Before closing the cover, make one deliberate final inspection. Verify that the correct bag is installed; the basket is seated; the bag body is supported and not visibly folded or twisted; the ring or collar is even; the specified retaining component is in place; and no tools, labels, packaging or debris remain inside the housing.
Recheck the cover seal and closure components. Close the housing only under its OEM instructions; different designs do not share a safe universal torque or tightening sequence.
If the closure does not align normally, do not use extra force to overcome the problem. Reopen only under the approved safe procedure and inspect for a displaced gasket, uneven bag top, incorrect retaining component or another obstruction.
6. Start the system under the equipment procedure
Startup should follow the actual housing manual and the site’s approved operating procedure. Those sources must define the valve sequence, venting method, allowable pressure, flow range and any required leak or pressure test. Avoid sudden hydraulic or pressure changes. Trapped gas, rapid valve movement and shock loading can affect the bag, seal and housing.
From a safe position, check for visible external leakage and watch available pressure, differential-pressure and flow indications. Do not compare an unstable startup reading with a normal operating baseline.
Once the system reaches a stable, comparable condition, record the upstream and downstream pressures or differential pressure, flow if available, liquid temperature, time, bag identity and relevant pump or valve condition. The acceptable operating and changeout limits must come from the housing, bag and process documentation—not from a universal number.

7. Record symptoms without over-diagnosing them
If the process shows external leakage, downstream carryover, unstable differential pressure, reduced flow, unusual noise, a displaced bag or a change after startup, record what happened and when. Keep the observations separate from the diagnosis. A leak-like result may involve the top seal, gasket, bag body, seam, housing, basket or another flow path. A pressure change may involve solids loading, viscosity, flow, valves, instrumentation, seating or process conditions.

Frequently asked questions
Can I install a replacement bag using only the Size #1 or Size #2 label?
No. Confirm actual dimensions, ring or collar, basket opening, sealing method and housing design. Size labels alone do not prove interface compatibility.
Should the filter bag have a support basket?
Industrial liquid filter bags normally rely on the compatible restrainer or support basket designed for the housing. Check the actual equipment manual; do not operate an unsupported bag unless the OEM explicitly designed and approved that arrangement.
How tight should I make the housing closure?
Use only the closure method, sequence, tool and torque stated for the actual housing. This guide intentionally provides no universal value because closure designs and hardware differ.
What startup pressure or differential pressure should I use?
Use the housing nameplate, filter-bag documentation, OEM manual and approved process limits. Record a stable baseline at a known flow and temperature rather than applying a generic number.
Does leakage or rising differential pressure prove the bag was installed incorrectly?
No. Installation is one possible factor, but the bag, seal, basket, housing, liquid, solids loading, flow, valves and instruments can produce similar symptoms. Record the evidence before assigning a cause.
